Greenland's Ice Sheet Melting Faster Than Expected

A new study published in the journal Nature reveals that Greenland's ice sheet is losing about 20% more ice than previously estimated, with almost every glacier in Greenland retreating. The research, led by glaciologist Chad Greene, combined over 200,000 observations of glacier end points from satellite images taken between 1985 and 2022, providing a comprehensive view of the ice sheet's contraction over the past 40 years. The melting ice, while not directly contributing to sea level rise, adds freshwater influx with implications for global climate models and the ocean currents that regulate temperatures on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean.
