Improving Ocean Current Studies with Machine Learning

A multidisciplinary research team including computer scientists at MIT and oceanographers has developed a new model that incorporates machine learning and fluid dynamics to more accurately predict ocean currents and identify divergences. The new model could help oceanographers make more accurate estimates from buoy data, which would enable them to more effectively monitor the transportation of biomass, carbon, plastics, oil, and nutrients in the ocean.
