NASA's Juno spacecraft made its closest approach to Jupiter's moon Io, passing within 930 miles of its volcanic surface. Juno, which has been studying Jupiter and its moons since 2016, aims to gather more data on Io's intense volcanic activity and its interaction with Jupiter's magnetosphere. The spacecraft captured new images with its suite of cameras, including the Jovian Infrared Auroral Mapper and JunoCam. Researchers are analyzing the heat signatures and high-resolution images to understand Io's eruptions and the possibility of a subsurface magma ocean. Juno is scheduled for another close flyby in February and will continue to monitor Io over the course of 18 flybys.
