Titan seas as mirror-smooth canvases: Cassini hints at methane-ethane mixing at estuaries

A 2024 Nature Communications reanalysis of four Cassini bistatic radar flybys (2014–2016) finds Titan’s open northern seas—Kraken Mare, Ligeia Mare, and Punga Mare—have ultra-smooth surfaces with RMS roughness at or below 3.3 mm at the radar wavelength, while adjacent estuaries are rougher, consistent with methane-rich rivers entering more ethane-rich seas. The results rely on dual-polarization radar reflections and precise geometry; they reflect a snapshot rather than a long-term weather record, and dielectric measurements indicate compositional gradients across seas. These findings illustrate how Cassini’s data can probe surface texture and composition from Earth, but a future mission would be needed to test the freshwater analogy and map Titan’s longer-term methane cycle.
