Windows 11 October Update Ends 24H2 Support and Boosts Performance

Microsoft’s October 2026 security update for Windows 11 arrives on October 13, marking the end of support for version 24H2. The release introduces File Explorer improvements, touchpad controls, and a new 'Open apps maximized' accessibility feature. While Microsoft did not officially announce it, users report significant RAM usage reductions and performance gains due to the Low Latency Profile, a feature that optimizes CPU usage for faster app launches.

Windows 11 26H2 ISOs Available for Download as Support Cycle Resets

Microsoft has released the Windows 11 26H2 ISO images for direct download, marking the 2026 annual feature update. While existing users on 24H2 and 25H2 receive the update via a tiny 174KB enablement package, the full ISO is approximately 7.9GB. This release resets the support lifecycle, extending coverage until October 2028 for consumer editions and October 2029 for enterprise versions. The update includes minor refinements to the taskbar, Start menu, and search functionality, though many features were already delivered through monthly updates.

Microsoft Deploys Windows 11 26H2 as a Lightweight Enablement Update

Microsoft has released Windows 11 version 26H2, the 2026 annual feature update, as a lightweight enablement package for devices running versions 24H2 and 25H2. This update activates features already present in the codebase, resets the support lifecycle, and introduces minor improvements to File Explorer, Search, and accessibility tools, while avoiding the major overhauls seen in previous years.

Windows 11 26H2 brings flexible Taskbar, customizable Start, and smarter Search

Microsoft’s Windows 11 26H2 update arriving this fall focuses on practical tweaks to Start, Taskbar, and Search: you can finally move the Taskbar to any edge (top, bottom, left, or right) with layout adjustments for each position, plus a smaller Taskbar option; the Start menu gains preset sizes, lets you toggle visibility of Pinned/Recent/All, and lets you separate file recommendations from system recommendations, plus a new screen-sharing privacy option to hide account details; Windows Search gets a redesigned home, more precise results that prioritize local content, new controls to turn off web and Store results, improved misspelling handling, and a taller search box. The changes are part of ongoing monthly updates rather than a full redesign, and some features may appear in 25H2 as they’re rolled out.

Windows 11 26H2 arrives as a faster, non-reinstall upgrade with longer support

Windows 11's 2026 Update (26H2) will be delivered as an Enablement Package that upgrades 25H2 to 26H2 without a full OS reinstall, using the same platform and features as 25H2. Upgrading from 25H2 is quick, often just a restart, while devices on older releases may require a full feature update. If you’re on Windows 10, you’ll receive a full upgrade to 26H2. The update extends support lifecycles (roughly 24 months for Home/Pro, 36 months for Enterprise/Education), with hardware requirements unchanged, and rollout will be gradual via Controlled Feature Rollouts. Plan to upgrade before 25H2’s end of life to stay supported, but there’s no rush since the features are largely the same across versions.

Windows 11 26H2 packs seven practical upgrades that could change daily PC use

Microsoft’s Windows 11 version 26H2 is arriving as a small enablement package in the second half of 2026. In the Windows Insider Experimental channel it adds seven practical features intended to give users more control and smoother daily use: an optional Ask Copilot integrated into Search, a more customizable Taskbar, a redesigned Start menu with flexible sizing and layout, the option to disable web results in Windows Search, expanded Windows Update controls (calendar-based pause and reduced reboots), Administrator Protection to harden elevated tasks with Windows Hello, and a modern, optional Run dialog with a broader, recent-commands view. These changes roll out gradually and become part of the supported release once enabled.

Windows 11 26H2 is coming, but not for every device

Microsoft confirms Windows 11 version 26H2 will arrive later this year, built on the same 2024 platform as 24H2/25H2 and easy for many to upgrade, but not everyone will be eligible. Devices running 26H1 (including those built for Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 and NVIDIA RTX Spark) won’t receive 26H2 this fall; users on 26H1 may be offered an upgrade to 27H2 later. Rollout is expected toward September or October.

Fall 2026 brings a lean Windows 11 26H2 via enablement update

Microsoft confirms Windows 11 26H2 will ship in fall 2026 as a lightweight enablement package for devices already on 24H2/25H2, delivering the same feature set with a very small install (often under 500KB) and a single reboot, with no new hardware requirements. It’s supported through October 2028 for Home/Pro/Pro EDU/Pro for Workstations and through October 2029 for Enterprise/Education/IoT Enterprise. Major changes will continue to arrive via monthly cumulative updates rather than yearly feature releases; 26H1 remains a separate silicon-based release with no exclusive features, and details on 27H2 aren’t confirmed yet.

Microsoft signals Windows 11 26H2 for late-2026 release, with 26H1 reserved for new ARM/Snapdragon X2 chips and 25H2 as the current feature update. An Insider build reveals an enablement package for 26H2 in Windows Update, suggesting a minor upgrade that could bring Copilot-driven features to File Explorer and the Windows Search experience, plus UI tweaks like Agenda View in the notifications center and a Modern Run, while major features may still arrive under 25H2.

Microsoft gears up Windows 11 with behind-the-scenes platform changes in new Insider wave

Microsoft says it’s beginning “behind-the-scenes platform changes” for Windows 11 and has started testing 26300-series builds in the Insider Dev Channel, ahead of the current 26220-based releases in Beta. The changes are not specified, but historically these platform updates tend to ship as version 26H2 this fall, with a 26H1 plan for spring on next-gen Arm devices (Bromine). For now, the Dev and Beta channels share features, and insiders can enroll to test the new builds, which may come with issues tied to the ongoing platform work.
