South Africa anti-poaching champion fatally gored by 2,900-pound rhino
Schoeman van Jaarsveld, a 58-year-old anti-poaching champion leading a Milk River Security team at the Samara Karoo Reserve, was fatally gored by a 2,900-pound black rhino during a morning patrol. The double-horned rhino charged after being startled; van Jaarsveld died at the scene and no shots were fired. He was credited with protecting rhinos from poachers amid active poaching gangs; an investigation is underway and tributes have poured in from colleagues who praised his dedication. The report notes rhino-poaching remains a major threat in the area, with 352 rhinos killed last year in the region.
