Finland seals a 200-km border fence with Russia to buttress NATO frontier
Finland completed a 200-kilometre, 4.5-metre-height border fence along its Russia frontier to strengthen NATO’s eastern edge amid concerns over Russian hybrid tactics and migration pressure. The project cost about €356 million with €2–3 million annual maintenance, and includes cameras and sensors. Helsinki hopes for EU funding to extend such barriers and has proposed extending the Border Security Act to 2028, following Finland’s 2023 NATO accession and a border closed to traffic since late 2023.
