Early-Life Sugar Restraint Linked to Lower Dementia Risk, UK Study Finds

A UK Biobank analysis of 60,394 people born 1951–1956 found that those whose first 1,000 days overlapped with sugar rationing had a 27% lower risk of dementia and a 46% lower risk of Alzheimer's disease, along with an 11% lower risk of depression and a 20% lower risk of anxiety. MRI data showed younger-appearing brains and larger hippocampus/thalamus volumes in the sugar-restricted group. While not proving causation, the researchers argue that nutrition during the critical first 1,000 days may program long-term brain health, though findings are observational and may not generalize widely.
