Xylitol Linked to 57% Higher Heart Risk in Large Observational Study
A large observational study presented at the European Society of Cardiology Congress 2026 found that high blood levels of xylitol, a common sweetener, are associated with a significantly increased risk of major adverse cardiovascular events. The analysis of 17,710 participants from Canada and Europe showed a 57% higher risk in one cohort and an 18% higher risk in another, suggesting a dose-dependent relationship. While the study does not prove causation, experts warn that xylitol may not be a safe substitute for sugar, particularly for those with existing heart conditions.
