Diploma Debate Delays Homeschooled Firefighter in Fremont

22-year-old Andrew Coates, a Cedar Bluffs Fire volunteer with an EMT license, was denied a Fremont firefighter job because his homeschooling diploma isn’t considered accredited. Fremont says accreditation is implied when a diploma is requested; supporters argue this blocks homeschooled applicants. At a Civil Service Commission hearing, officials voiced concerns but took no action to change policy, leaving Coates about 30 days to pursue court action.

The blaze forced a defensive stance after the south-side roof collapsed, and Fireboat 1 pumped water from the Lake Washington Ship Canal to assist. The flames were brought under control by about 7:39 p.m.; one firefighter was lightly injured and no hospital transport was needed. Rabid bat spotted near Fremont sidewalk prompts rabies precautions

A bat found near a sidewalk in the Palo Verde Common area of South Fremont tested positive for rabies, triggering a local investigation led by Alameda County Vector Control and leafleting of the nearby area; there are currently no known human or animal exposures. Residents are advised to vaccinate pets, keep dogs confined, avoid handling wild animals, report bites, and bat-proof homes by sealing openings larger than a quarter inch. If a bat is touched or bitten, contact the Alameda County Public Health Acute Communicable Disease program and seek medical care immediately, as rabies is fatal but preventable with timely post-exposure treatment.

"Fremont, Nebraska: Seeking Migrant Workers While Barring Illegal Aliens"

Fremont, Nebraska, a small town with three meat-processing plants, has seen an influx of Central American migrants taking over jobs left by young locals. Despite the need for workers, the town has a controversial law barring undocumented migrants from living within city limits. The arrival of migrants has transformed the community and kept the slaughterhouses running, but has also created a strain on city services. Efforts have been made to welcome newcomers, but the law requiring individuals to state their legal presence remains unenforceable and divisive.

"Upcoming Meteor Showers and Fireballs: A Skywatcher's Guide to Fremont"

Stargazers in Fremont, California have the best chances of seeing the Taurid meteors this weekend, with shooting stars continuing throughout November. The Taurids consist of two debris streams, the Southern Taurids and Northern Taurids, both of which are currently active. The Southern Taurids are predicted to peak overnight on Sunday, making any night this weekend a good time for skywatching. However, cloudy weather may obstruct the view until Tuesday. The Taurids are known for producing a higher percentage of fireballs, but expectations should be kept low for a repeat of last year's "Taurid fireball swarm." The Taurids will remain active through December, intersecting with the upcoming Leonids, Geminids, Ursids, and Quadrantids meteor showers.
