University of Michigan researchers have discovered that less evolved dwarf galaxies have larger regions of star formation due to a 10-million-year delay in blowing out gas and dust. In these pristine galaxies, massive stars collapse into black holes instead of exploding as supernovae, allowing star-forming regions to retain their gas and dust and form more stars. This delay also offers astronomers a glimpse into scenarios similar to the cosmic dawn after the Big Bang. The findings have implications for understanding the properties of galaxies observed by the James Webb Space Telescope.
