Glacier Reunites Austrian Hiker with 60-Year-Old Lost Backpack
An 86-year-old Austrian mountaineer is reunited with his lost backpack and climbing gear—ice axe, camera and a 1950s/60s pipe—after they emerged from the melting Sulztalferner glacier in Tyrol, about 2,955 meters up, more than 60 years after he dropped them during a 1963 crevasse incident. Hiker found the items in July; police traced the owner via frayed documents, and they were returned to him through his son since he was too ill to collect them. The discovery comes amid ongoing glacier retreat linked to climate warming.
