Roman Space Telescope Launch Moves Up to Aug. 30, Eight Months Ahead of Schedule

NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is now slated to launch Aug. 30, eight months ahead of the previous target. The observatory is being prepared at Goddard, shipped to Kennedy Space Center for testing, then attached to a SpaceX Falcon Heavy for a journey to the L2 point. Over a five-year mission, it will survey billions of stars and galaxies, probe thousands of exoplanets, and study black holes, at a lifetime cost of about $4.3 billion.

Airbus to Build UK's ESA Space Weather Satellite Vigil

The European Space Agency has awarded Airbus Defence and Space a €340 million contract to build the Vigil spacecraft, which will monitor the sun from the L-5 Lagrange point to provide early warnings of solar activity. Slated for a 2031 launch, Vigil will be Europe's first 24/7 operational space weather satellite, enhancing the lead time and detail of space weather warnings to protect critical infrastructure on Earth. The project will support over 150 jobs in the UK and involve international collaboration, including instruments from the US.

Euclid satellite prepped for July launch from US site.

The Euclid spacecraft has arrived at the Astrotech facility near Cape Canaveral after finishing its ocean cruise and will undergo subsystem testing before being mounted on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket for launch no earlier than July. The mission aims to map billions of galaxies out to 10 billion light years and uncover the mysteries of the "dark" Universe, which makes up more than 95% of the mass and energy in our Universe, including dark matter and energy that affect the motion and distribution of visible sources but do not emit, absorb or reflect any light.
