
Mitochondrial plaques emerge as a new Alzheimer's culprit
Nature Neuroscience reports a new Alzheimer's pathology: mitochondrial plaques formed from impaired mitophagy, found in both mouse models and human brains, that can appear with or without amyloid-beta, accumulate in neuronal processes, recruit lysosomes, and hamper mitochondrial degradation. This suggests future therapies should target mitochondrial toxicity alongside amyloid pathology and aim to boost mitophagy to slow disease progression.
