Microsoft Pushes Emergency Office Patch for Actively Exploited Zero-Day

Microsoft issued emergency out-of-band security updates to fix a high-severity Office zero-day (CVE-2026-21509) being actively exploited. The flaw affects multiple Office versions, including 2016, 2019, LTSC 2021/2024, and Microsoft 365 Apps for Enterprise, with patches for 2016/2019 not yet available. Exploitation requires user interaction via a malicious Office file, bypassing OLE mitigations. Office 2021+ will be protected via a service-side change (restart required). For older Office versions, Microsoft provides mitigations, including registry changes, to reduce exploitation risk. Additional related fixes were noted from January 2026 Patch Tuesday.

Microsoft patches Windows 11 shutdown and remote-login bugs with emergency out-of-band fix

Microsoft issued an out-of-band emergency patch for the January 2026 Windows security update that fixes a shutdown/hibernate bug on some Windows 11 PCs and restores remote login via credential prompts on Windows 10/11 devices; the fix also addresses Secure Launch startup-security issues. Some users still report lingering problems like blank screens or Outlook Classic crashes, and Microsoft noted related fixes from October 2025 for Windows Recovery Environment. Windows 10 users can continue with Extended Security Updates if they’re not ready to upgrade.

Emergency patch lands after Windows 11 23H2 shutdown bug hits Enterprise/IoT editions

Microsoft released the January 2026 Windows security update, but four days later issued an emergency out-of-band fix after reports that the update could prevent some systems from shutting down or hibernating and could block remote desktop logins. The shutdown issue affected only Windows 11 version 23H2 on Enterprise and IoT editions, and Microsoft later clarified the scope and released the fix (with an update on Jan 18 stating 23H2 was the affected variant).
