Frequent urination: when to worry and what might be behind it
Frequent urination is defined as eight or more daytime trips to the bathroom, with nighttime urination (nocturia) treated as a separate issue often linked to sleep apnea. Common causes include overhydration and caffeine, overactive bladder, neurological conditions, poorly controlled diabetes (glucose acts as an osmotic diuretic), pelvic floor changes, and an enlarged prostate. Some medications can also increase urination. Watch for burning or blood in the urine, which can indicate infection. If frequent urination is impacting daily life, it’s advised to see a urologist for evaluation.
