Sailors aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln describe a punishing, months‑long deployment with no clear end in sight, saying the grueling mission took a toll on morale and prompted some to reconsider a long career in the Navy, according to interviews cited by The Wall Street Journal.
A near-nine-month, port-scarce deployment aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln has raised concerns about sailor welfare after reports of water shortages, plumbing problems, low morale, and worsening mental health, including suicide attempts; lawmakers are seeking Pentagon answers. Navy officials say there is no confirmed rise in suicidality and point to onboard support, while experts warn that extended deployments without shore leave amplify stress and uncertainty about when sailors will return home.
Thousands of sailors aboard about 1,600 ships are trapped in and around the Strait of Hormuz as the war blocks the waterway, leaving crews exhausted and anxious amid ongoing missile and drone activity; supplies are unreliable and water costs have surged, with up to 11 sailors killed and one missing, while diplomacy and toll payments have enabled roughly 750 ships to pass so far.
An Iraqi ship captain keeps steering through volatile waters despite the risk of attacks, highlighting the wartime toll on mariners: months at sea away from family, while supplies stay steady and decades of experience help him adapt under pressure.
The bodies of 84 Iranian sailors killed when a US submarine torpedoed the Iris Dena are being flown back to Iran via Sri Lanka, while 32 survivors remain in Sri Lanka; the incident near Sri Lanka and the release of the bodies to Iran have intensified tensions.
The Royal Navy has tightened alcohol rules on ships, requiring sailors to abstain for two days each week and capping total weekly intake at 14 units (about six pints), with a three-unit daily limit. The policy, aligned with UK government health guidance, aims to improve fitness, safety, and operational readiness.
Three sailors stranded on a tiny Pacific atoll were rescued after making a "HELP" sign with palm tree leaves, which was spotted from the air. The men, who had been living on coconuts, were found on Pikelot Atoll after a distress call from a relative. The U.S. Coast Guard and Navy coordinated the rescue, dropping survival packages and a radio onto the island before picking up the sailors. This is not the first time sailors have been rescued from the atoll after making a sign with palm leaves.
Cats have been seafaring animals for thousands of years, serving as pest control on boats and providing companionship to sailors. They were spread around the world by ancient seafaring communities like the Phoenicians and Vikings, and later by European explorers. The animals were so revered that islanders would often try to steal them from British trading ships. The US Navy also had its own service cats, as shown in old photos.
The search for three American sailors who went missing off Mexico's northern Pacific coast since April 4 has been suspended after the Mexican Navy and the US Coast Guard spent roughly 280 hours searching nearly 200,000 square miles with no sign of the missing passengers and the missing sailing vessel. The sailors reportedly left Mazatlán aboard a 44-foot boat named Ocean Bound on April 4 and were headed to San Diego, but there was no record of their arrival in Cabo San Lucas nor a check-in of their location.
The Mexican navy has suspended the search for three American sailors who went missing off the country's northern Pacific coast more than two weeks ago. The US Coast Guard said that Mexican forces and US assets had spent a total of 281 hours searching about 200,000 square nautical miles but had found no sign of the missing people or the sailboat. The trio of sailors were aboard the 44-foot fiberglass sailing vessel “Ocean Bound” when they were last heard from on April 4, officials have said.
Three American sailors have been missing off the coast of Mexico since April 4, and the US and Mexican authorities have been searching for them. The sailors were attempting to sail their 41-foot sailboat from Mazatlán to San Diego. The US Coast Guard believes that the sailors likely encountered "significant" weather and waves, with swells and wind creating waves potentially over 20 feet high. The lack of clear information about the sailors' location, partially attributable to the lack of GPS tracking and poor cellular service near the Baja peninsula, has left the families of the missing Americans uncertain about their loved ones' whereabouts.
The U.S. Coast Guard is conducting a search for three American sailors who went missing off the coast of Mexico earlier this month. The sailors were aboard the sailing vessel Ocean Bound and were en route to San Diego, but there is no record of them reporting to their destination. The Mexican Navy is assisting with the search, and urgent marine information broadcasts have been issued to all mariners to keep a lookout for the missing persons and vessel.
