EU lays groundwork to shield aviation from Iran-war fuel shocks
The European Commission plans a broad energy/transport package to guard aviation against jet-fuel shortages tied to the Iran war, including a new fuel observatory, guidance on slots and passenger rights, and potential emergency stock releases, while warning that a Hormuz blockade could be catastrophic. With the EU importing 30-40% of its jet fuel (roughly half from the Middle East), officials say there are no current shortages or widespread cancellations, though higher fuel costs are being felt. The package also aims to accelerate sustainable aviation fuel and synthetic fuels to reduce Middle East dependence and may consider US Jet A imports; anti-tankering rules may be clarified. Europe stresses no need to curb travel, and compensation for delays/cancellations would not be waived due to fuel prices.
