Global Bond Yields Hit Decade Highs as Iran Conflict Spikes Oil Prices
Government bond yields surged across the U.S., Japan, U.K., and Germany on Tuesday, reaching multi-decade highs. The spike was driven by renewed U.S.-Iran hostilities near the Strait of Hormuz, which pushed oil prices up and revived inflation fears. The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield hit a 20-month high at 4.79%, while Japan’s 10-year yield exceeded 3% for the first time since 1996. U.K. 10-year Gilts reached their highest level since 2008, and German 10-year Bunds hit a 52-week high. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent dismissed concerns, calling the U.S. bond market the best-performing globally, but analysts warned that deficit issues and energy costs are pressuring yields worldwide.
