Mortgage Rates Hit Three-Week High, Cooling Loan Demand
Mortgage rates reached a three-week high last week, with the 30-year fixed rate rising to 6.78%, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association. This increase led to a 1% drop in total mortgage applications, with refinance applications falling 2% and purchase applications declining 0.3%. Refinance applications are now 17% lower than a year ago, while purchase applications are 5% lower. The rise in rates is attributed to falling oil prices and bond yields, which correlate with mortgage rates.
