Pixel 11 series introduces customizable vibration patterns for ringtones and notifications (Heartbeat, Gears, Rattlesnake, Pulse, and more) and lets you assign a specific vibration to individual contacts for caller ID without looking at the screen.
CU Boulder researchers found that ordinary office staples exhibit a controllable switch between rigid and flowing states driven by particle geometry and vibration. A two-legged staple geometry yields strong interlocking; 90-degree crowns initially entangle more densely than 20-degree variants, but after about 36,000 vibration cycles the 20-degree staples gain much stronger bonds, enabling tensile strengths over 100%. Under confinement, vibration promotes entanglement; on open surfaces it disperses into a flat layer. This reversible behavior could enable assembly/disassembly of structures for construction and robotics, with ongoing work exploring even more effective legged designs.
Researchers show ultrafast charge transfer at a donor–acceptor junction in an organic solar cell, where vibrations of the donor polymer launch an electron across the junction in about 18 femtoseconds. This vibronic mechanism acts like a molecular catapult, enabling faster, more coherent charge transfer than thought possible and suggesting new design strategies that exploit, rather than suppress, molecular motion to improve organic solar cell efficiency.
Researchers are exploring how vibrating tendons can reduce the perceived effort of exercise by altering brain signals, potentially making physical activity feel easier and encouraging more people to stay active, although the research is still in early stages and limited to short cycling sessions.
The new Xbox Series X/S controller features visible triggers that vibrate, showcasing the speed and intensity of the rumble function. The controller is priced at $80, while the accompanying gaming headset costs $125.
