The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) will investigate the auroras of Uranus and Saturn, led by two separate teams of astronomers at the University of Leicester. The aim is to understand the processes that create these polar light shows over different planets and to potentially shed light on the mechanisms that create auroras in the solar system and beyond. The study will use the JWST's highly sensitive Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) instrument to capture images and monitor the auroral regions of the gas giants. The findings could also provide insights into the atmospheres and magnetic fields of exoplanets, potentially influencing their suitability for life.
