RHIC Data Suggests Gluon Junctions, Not Quarks, Carry Baryon Number
New findings from the STAR detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) suggest that the Y-shaped gluon junction inside protons, rather than the three valence quarks, primarily carries baryon number. This challenges the standard textbook model where baryon number is divided equally among quarks. The study, published in Science, indicates that this gluon structure is easier to stop in high-energy collisions, leading to an observed excess of baryons perpendicular to the beamline that cannot be explained by quark behavior alone.
