Gothic Orchids in Global Crossfire: The Dracula Trade Threatening Rare Species
New research traces four decades of Dracula orchid trade, finding that 121 of 133 species (91%) have been traded since 1981, totaling over 112,000 plants across 25 exporting and 52 importing countries. Nearly half of the material comes from outside the orchids’ native ranges, and many species were first described from nursery stock rather than wild populations, raising concerns about mislabeling and wild-sourced material. The study authors urge upgrading Dracula to CITES Appendix I to curb exploitation and protect evolutionary history, noting that several species remain extremely rare in the wild.
