Ethiopia-Eritrea Diplomatic Rupture Escalates Northern Conflict
Ethiopia and Eritrea have severed diplomatic ties, escalating a long-standing dispute into active conflict. The rupture follows Addis Ababa’s expulsion of 10 Eritrean diplomats and closure of its embassy in Asmara, which Asmara described as an 'astounding' act of hostility. This diplomatic breakdown coincides with intensified fighting in northern Ethiopia, where federal forces are battling a rebel alliance led by the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF). The conflict has spread to the Amhara and Afar regions, with over 50 civilians reported dead. Analysts warn that the crisis risks spilling into neighboring Sudan and Egypt, potentially triggering a broader regional war.
