UN: Venezuela’s repressive machinery endures amid limited reforms
A UN Fact-Finding Mission says Venezuela’s repressive state institutions and pro-government colectivos remain largely intact despite some modest reforms after the 2026 events. While political detentions dropped and some space for protests briefly opened, the report finds no structural changes, ongoing torture and dire detention conditions, and hundreds still detained for political reasons. It urges accountability, dismantling repressive structures, judicial independence, transitional justice, and greater international support, and calls on Caracas to cooperate with international bodies and reverse its withdrawal from the Rome Statute.
