Descending into Iceland’s molten heart: the world’s only magma-chamber tour
Thríhnúkagígur, a dormant volcano near Reykjavík, hosts the world’s only magma chamber accessible to visitors, reached via an open cable elevator that lowers guests about 210 meters into a hollow chamber whose walls glow with colors from microbes and minerals. Scientists believe the last magma feeding the chamber occurred around 4,500 years ago, with magma likely draining back into the crust, making it a rare geological feature and a unique tourism experience.
