Oregon’s Perseid meteor shower to light up the night this weekend

In Oregon, the Perseid meteor shower peaks Aug. 12–13 with 50–100 meteors per hour and bright fireballs; a new moon will yield darker skies. OMSI is hosting watch parties at Stub Stewart and Rooster Rock State Parks, and NASA will stream a live watch on YouTube at 9 p.m. PDT. For best viewing, seek dark skies away from city lights, lie back, and look northeast toward Perseus, with peak observing around midnight to 4 a.m. but meteors can appear outside those hours depending on conditions.

Star Parties Light Up Oregon Nights with OMSI at Two State Parks

OMSI and Rose City Astronomers are hosting free dusk star parties through September at L. L. Stub Stewart State Park and Rooster Rock State Park (9–11 pm, weather permitting; telescopes provided; bring chairs, blankets, snacks, water, and warm clothing). A $10 parking fee applies at the state parks (annual pass if you have one). Event dates include Summer Night Sky on July 18 and Perseid Meteor Shower Watch on Aug. 12 at Stub Stewart, and an Equinox Celebration on Sept. 12 at Rooster Rock; parks close by 11:45 pm. Oregon Coast Beach Connection has already witnessed some impressive moments, including shooting stars and a satellite. The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) is hosting a Perseid Meteor Shower Watch on August 12 at Rooster Rock State Park. The Perseids are caused by debris from the comet Swift-Tuttle and can be seen as bright streaks across the night sky. The best viewing conditions are expected on the evening of August 11-12, with the moon's absence aiding visibility.
