Navigational Demands May Shield Hippocampus from Alzheimer's
A 2024 study analyzing nearly 9 million U.S. death certificates found that taxi and ambulance drivers have a significantly lower risk of dying from Alzheimer's disease compared to the general population. This benefit appears linked to the continuous spatial navigation required in these roles, which exercises the hippocampus, a brain region often affected early by Alzheimer's. In contrast, transportation workers on fixed routes, such as bus drivers and pilots, did not show the same protective effect.
