AI unlocks 2,000-year-old Herculaneum scrolls, hinting at a Stoic work

Researchers from the Vesuvius Challenge digitally unwrapped two Herculaneum scrolls (PHerc. 1667 and PHerc. 172) using high‑resolution imaging and AI, revealing about 5 feet of Greek text across 20 columns on PHerc. 1667 and more than 70 columns from PHerc. 172. The deciphered passages appear to be a Stoic treatise on ethics and behavior, possibly referencing Aristocreon, the nephew of Chrysippus, and date to the 2nd–3rd century BCE—well earlier than Philodemus. This breakthrough, achieved with synchrotron imaging and papyrologist analysis, marks a milestone in reading carbonized scrolls and hints at many more unread texts among the roughly 600 unopened Herculaneum scrolls.

AI unrolls a 2,000-year-old Herculaneum scroll, revealing Stoic texts

A carbonized papyrus scroll from Herculaneum, PHerc. 1667, has been virtually unwrapped and partially deciphered using AI and CT scans as part of the Vesuvius Challenge. Researchers were able to reveal almost 1.5 meters (4.9 feet) of text across 20 columns, dating to the 2nd–3rd centuries BC and likely containing Stoic ethical discussions. The breakthrough, led by Brent Seales and collaborators, marks the first time such a scroll has been read without destructive physical unrolling, offering new insights into ancient philosophy and the scrolls’ history (including references to Philodemus).

Stoic Underdog: Mendoza’s Path to the No. 1 Draft Pick

Sports Illustrated profiles Fernando Mendoza, a two-star high school quarterback who defied early expectations to lead Indiana to a national championship and generate top‑of‑draft buzz. Praised for pinpoint accuracy, clutch play, and a Stoic, cerebral approach, Mendoza has grown from Cal to Indiana under a development‑oriented regime, aligning his intangibles with modern NFL scheming. Evaluators note elite leadership and intellect but also the need to refine deep throws, mobility, and scheme fit. With a strong support system and a focus on reps and growth, he’s positioned as a plausible No. 1 pick for a franchise prioritizing a smart, ready‑to‑grow quarterback.

While she chooses not to live her life according to Stoic precepts, she allows her husband to keep a bust of Marcus Aurelius on their dresser as a source of comfort. Ultimately, she realizes that everyone has their own ways of finding peace and managing anxiety.

Remembering Marilyn Lovell: Wife of Apollo 13 Commander Passes at 93

Marilyn Lovell, wife of Apollo 13 commander James A. Lovell Jr., passed away at the age of 93. As an astronaut's wife, she exemplified the emotional challenges faced by the wives of astronauts during the space program. Marilyn Lovell supported her husband's dream of going to the moon, raising their four children largely on her own and enduring sexist coverage. During the Apollo 13 mission, she maintained a brave facade for the public while privately praying and fearing the worst. The successful return of the astronauts inspired the film "Apollo 13." Marilyn Lovell was an active member of the Astronaut Wives Club and her marriage to James Lovell endured the stresses of spaceflight.
