Venezuela hit by back-to-back earthquakes as rescue efforts race to save lives
Two powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela’s northern coast in quick succession, a 7.2 foreshock followed by a 7.5 main event, the strongest quakes the country has seen in over a century. Dozens were killed and hundreds injured as buildings collapsed across Caracas and La Guaira, with authorities declaring a state of emergency. The U.S. pledged rescue teams and humanitarian aid as casualty figures were expected to rise and officials noted there was no tsunami threat.
