Xi's Military Purge Creates Strategic Vacuum Amid US-China Truce
China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) is undergoing a massive leadership purge, leaving its command structure hollowed out and operationally fragile. This internal crisis coincides with a new 'strategic stability' framework with the United States, which Beijing is using to mask its military weakness while rebuilding. The purge has removed nearly all senior leaders appointed by Xi in 2022, including his personal secretary Zhong Shaojun, signaling a shift from patronage to fear-based control. While the US-China truce offers Beijing cover to repair its forces, analysts warn that Washington is inadvertently ceding leverage, as Beijing uses the quiet period to modernize its military and harden its stance on Taiwan.
