U.S. Destroyers Open a Mine-Cleared Route Through Hormuz for Merchant Traffic

Two U.S. Navy guided-missile destroyers, USS Frank E. Peterson and USS Michael Murphy, transited the Strait of Hormuz to begin establishing a mine-cleared passage intended to enable the free flow of merchant shipping, with additional unmanned and manned assets slated to join the effort. CENTCOM says the operation is to set conditions for clearing mines and will share the safe route with the maritime industry, marking the first American warship transit since the late-February U.S.-Israel actions against Iran.

"Turkey, Romania, and Bulgaria Join Forces to Clear Black Sea Mines"

Turkey, Romania, and Bulgaria have signed a memorandum of understanding to establish a mine countermeasures naval group in the Black Sea to clear floating mines resulting from the war in Ukraine. The initiative will involve four military vessels carrying out patrols to hunt mines and will only be open to military ships of the three Black Sea coastal states. Sea mines have posed a threat to Ukraine's export routes via the Black Sea since Russia's invasion in February 2022, and the initiative aims to address this issue.

As Ukraine prepares for a counteroffensive against Russia, its troops must first clear thousands of mines along its front line by hand at night. Russia has created a massive system of engineering barriers that pose a serious obstacle to the mobility of troops. Ukraine will need special training and equipment as well as careful reconnaissance to find a weak spot to punch through these fortifications. If it works, it could be a bloodbath.
