Archaeology Team Launches October Quest for Amelia Earhart’s Plane

An Archaeological Legacy Institute–Purdue University team will launch Oct. 7 from Tarawa to Nikumaroro Island, Kiribati, to search for Amelia Earhart’s Lockheed Electra 10-E, inspecting a satellite-identified anomaly known as the Taraia Object and testing the Nikumaroro Hypothesis that Earhart and Noonan landed there after disappearing in 1937; the 16-member team will conduct fieldwork, review bones and artifacts, and push for evidence after years of permitting delays.

Debunking the Myth: Amelia Earhart and the Giant Crabs.

The mystery of what happened to Amelia Earhart has been a topic of speculation for decades. One theory that has gained popularity in recent years is that she was eaten by giant coconut crabs after crashing on Nikumaroro. Researchers from TIGHAR have performed experiments using pig carcasses to see if the crabs would scatter human remains, which may explain why only 13 bones were found in 1940. However, despite several attempts to solve the mystery, nothing conclusive has been discovered.
