Big Sur Evacuations Under Timber Fire as Coast Highway Closes
Evacuations were ordered along California’s Big Sur coast as the Timber Fire in Monterey County grew to about 2,000 acres with around 500 firefighters on scene; the blaze threatened tourist sites such as Nepenthe, Henry Miller Memorial Library and Alila Ventana, prompted a partial closure of Highway 1 to nonresidents, and officials are focused on protecting homes while containment was only about 5% as crews work in rugged terrain; the fire is moving slowly and the cause is under investigation, with 259 buildings threatened.
