Cyborg cockroaches could deliver emergency aid in collapsed buildings

Researchers fitted giant burrowing cockroaches with cameras and remotely activated injectors to create 'paraborgs' that can navigate rubble and deliver emergency care when rescuers can't reach victims. In tests, close-range injections succeeded 95% of the time within 15 cm, while full navigation-and-injection succeeded in 72% of trials. Insects are anaesthetised during fitting and live like normal cockroaches afterward. The long-term aim is swarms of cyborg insects that extend rescue teams' reach, potentially within five to ten years.

Robotic swarms bloom into adaptive building facades

Princeton researchers built a 40‑unit swarm of modular SGbots that sense light and bloom a thin plastic sheet to adapt façades and interior spaces; demonstrations include autonomous shading of an office window and interactive, gesture-controlled displays, with future work focusing on real‑world deployment feasibility and more sustainable materials.

"NASA's Bold Plan: Swarming Proxima Centauri with Tiny Probes"

NASA has selected the Swarming Proxima Centauri project for Phase I development, aiming to utilize gram-scale spacecraft propelled by a 100-gigawatt laser beamer to reach Proxima Centauri and its Earth-like exoplanet by the third quarter of this century. The project, led by Space Initiatives Inc. and the Initiative for Interstellar Studies, could have applications in space exploration, Earth observation, medicine, additive manufacturing, environmental studies, and more through the development of a coherent swarm of robotic probes.

"NASA's Ambitious 2024 Mission: Swarm Proxima Centauri with Tiny Probes and Far-Out Space Tech"

NASA has selected a proposal called Swarming Proxima Centauri, which involves using gram-scale spacecraft propelled by a 100-gigawatt laser beamer to reach Proxima Centauri and its Earth-like exoplanet by the third quarter of this century. The concept, developed by Space Initiatives Inc. and the Initiative for Interstellar Studies, aims to overcome the challenges of interstellar travel by utilizing swarm dynamics and autonomous navigation. The mission could have applications in space exploration, Earth observation, and various fields on Earth, but the primary obstacle remains the cost of the laser array.
