High school teacher uncovers first adult T. rex trackway in North Dakota
A North Dakota high school science teacher on a fossil dig discovered four massive three-toed footprints forming a 23-foot trackway in the Hell Creek Formation, dating to about 66.5 million years ago. Researchers conclude the prints are likely from an adult Tyrannosaurus rex, providing rare movement data beyond what bones can reveal. The finds were documented with high‑resolution 3D scans, and three footprints are slated for recovery and transport to Denver for further study, helping researchers infer the predator’s gait and pace (roughly 1.5–2 m/s, about 3.4–4.5 mph).
