Deer Antler Stem Cells Used to Grow Mini Antlers on Mice

Chinese researchers have found that deer antler blastema progenitor cells could be a source of conserved regeneration cells in higher vertebrates, with potential applications in clinical bone repair. The study suggests that there are relatively conserved cellular and molecular mechanisms for the only two known cases of regenerative capacity in mammalian appendage organs, deer antlers and mouse foretoe tips. The researchers successfully isolated the essential cell types for regeneration and grew antler-like boney cartilage formations on the skull caps of laboratory mice.
