Tadpole-Shaped Islands Spotlight Azerbaijan’s Mud-Volcano Belt
NASA’s Earth Observatory highlights tadpole‑shaped mud‑volcano islands off Azerbaijan’s Absheron Peninsula, formed by explosive mud eruptions and sculpted by currents. Azerbaijan hosts hundreds of mud volcanoes on land and in the South Caspian Sea, with notable islands like Xərə Zirə Adası and Səngi Muğan Adası that have violent eruption histories and ongoing vent activity, illustrating a geologically active, methane‑rich landscape.
