Spokane-area wildfires drive mass evacuations in Washington state
More than 60,000 people were ordered to evacuate parts of Washington state as multiple wildfires around Spokane burned unchecked, destroying hundreds of buildings and leaving thousands without power. Officials say the blazes are not contained, with extreme fire weather and gusty winds; Governor Ferguson declared a statewide emergency and sought federal assistance after speaking with President Trump. With warmer temperatures expected later in the week, climate-change–linked conditions continue to fuel fire risk, though there have been no confirmed deaths yet.
