Mars Dust: The Hidden Health Hazard for Future Habitats
NASA’s Martian Dust Limit Working Group is assessing health risks and proposing a conservative, data-driven permissible exposure standard for Mars crews. Martian dust contains perchlorates and heavy metals, posing health risks especially in closed habitats, so the emphasis is on prevention: keep dust outside the habitat, remove it quickly, monitor airborne particles, and design life-support and filtration accordingly. The standard will be revisited as new data emerge, aided by lunar-dust lessons and the possibility of Mars dust samples, though sample return remains uncertain.
