DLSS 5 Nudges NBA 2K27 Toward Realism, But at a Steep Power Price

NVIDIA's DLSS 5 AI upscaling adds subtle detail to NBA 2K27’s players and crowds, but the gains are minor and come with a heavy power penalty—from ~400W to ~525W on an RTX 5090 at 4K—plus reports of even higher draw and potential hardware stress. The feature remains optional, with broader support planned for older RTX GPUs later and other developers on board, yet the practical benefits may not justify the increased energy use for most gamers.

Data Centers Unveiled: The AI Engine Behind the Internet and Its Water Footprint

Data centers are more than power drains: they store, route, and process vast amounts of data for the internet and AI workloads, combining traditional servers with GPUs/TPUs and extensive cooling. They underwrite cloud services, web hosting, and wireless networks, while AI-focused centers face scrutiny for high resource use—from massive cooling needs (Amazon’s AI facilities reportedly use billions of gallons of water) to experimental setups like underwater centers—yet many run on renewables and bolster system resilience.

Webb Survives 344 Failure Points, Now Runs on Less Power Than a Tea Kettle at L2

Launched with a list of 344 single-point failures, the James Webb Space Telescope avoided every one through a careful, unattended deployment. The sunshield’s successful unfolding and the mirror alignments minimized risk, enabling a mission at the Sun–Earth L2 point about 1.5 million kilometers from Earth. Remarkably, Webb now operates on roughly one kilowatt of power—about the same as a household kettle—thanks to passive cooling and shade, letting it conduct ultra‑sensitive infrared astronomy from a million miles away.

US Data-Center Buildout Could Put 50% More Strain on Power Grid

BI's analysis projects U.S. data centers could consume about 224–359 TWh per year if all 2025 permits come online—roughly a 50% rise—driven by hyperscale facilities powering AI. With 176 new centers approved in 2025 across 34 states, many in rural areas, concerns rise about water use, higher electricity prices, and impacts on local economies; residents press for limits and on-site generation, while utilities fund grid upgrades, and lawmakers debate policy. Proponents say centers anchor economic growth and high-wage jobs, and major tech firms pledge to share grid-investment costs, though BI notes its estimates may undercount some facilities due to permit data limitations.

MacBook Air 13 M5 Delivers Sub-10W Gaming Power

Apple's MacBook Air 13 with the base M5 SoC remains exceptionally energy-efficient in gaming, drawing about 7–8 watts and delivering playable frame rates (around 19–20 fps at 1080p ultra in Cyberpunk 2077) thanks to its passive cooling. The Air 13 under sustained workloads throttles to roughly 8W, while the overall system consumption stays around 19W—making it one of the most efficient laptops in Notebookcheck's database, though the M5 in higher-end MacBook Pro 14 configurations offers more performance at higher power use.

Qualcomm's Snapdragon Chips: Balancing Power, Performance, and Future Uncertainty

Qualcomm's upcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 is expected to offer performance improvements but will likely have similar power consumption as its predecessor, due to the use of an updated 3nm process that provides minimal efficiency gains. Despite this, manufacturers may offset power needs with larger batteries, and Qualcomm aims to maximize performance through higher core frequencies.

Investing in a Fast CPU: Worthwhile Upgrade

The article discusses the value of keeping old CPUs versus upgrading to faster ones, emphasizing that older hardware can still be powerful and sufficient for many tasks. It argues that investing in high-performance CPUs offers long-term benefits, especially for developers, by reducing compile times and maintaining productivity, but also cautions about increased power consumption and costs. The piece highlights that incremental hardware improvements can significantly impact work efficiency over time, and that companies often underinvest in developer hardware, which can be penny-wise and pound-foolish.
