Brussels rejects US-Russia bid to revive Nord Stream, citing binding EU phase-out laws
The European Commission has firmly rejected reports that the US and Russia are negotiating to restart the Nord Stream pipeline, stating that EU legislation mandates the complete phase-out of Russian gas by late 2027 regardless of the war's outcome. While Washington and Moscow have floated a deal involving a US investor to revive gas flows, Brussels insists that existing regulations, not just wartime sanctions, prohibit such imports. Dutch PM Rob Jetten echoed this stance, calling the idea 'stupid' and urging tougher sanctions instead. The pipeline remains inoperable, with Nord Stream 1 damaged since 2022 and Nord Stream 2 never certified by Germany.
