Fortress belt under pressure as Russia presses toward Donbas strongholds
Ukraine’s Donbas defenses are under mounting strain as Russia inches toward the fortress belt’s key hubs, threatening Sloviansk and Kramatorsk while Kostyantynivka has been effectively lost. Daily bombardments and drones render frontline towns uninhabitable, with civilians evacuated or living under constant danger. ISW notes Russia advanced about 124 square kilometers in August at a very slow pace, but western analysts warn that breaching the fortress belt could allow Moscow to push deeper into Ukraine, even as Kyiv struggles to hold remaining strongholds and Putin touts tangible advances.
