AI maps dinosaur tracks, uncovers earliest bird footprints
AI-powered DinoTracker analyzes dinosaur footprints from photos or sketches, trained on thousands of real and simulated tracks to account for natural variation. It achieved about 90% agreement with human experts and highlighted bird-like footprints in ancient tracks, raising questions about when birds evolved or whether some dinosaur feet converged on avian shapes. The tool aims to speed analysis and broaden participation, with the full study published in PNAS.
