Do Electrons Exist? Physicists Probe What Reality Means in Science
A 2024 survey of 384 physicists investigates whether scientific theories describe real entities (like electrons) or merely predict observations. The study identifies stance clusters such as perspectival realism and instrumentalism, notes that some entities may be real while others are better understood as mathematical structures or instrumental tools, and finds only weak links between a physicist’s realism view and their experimental/theoretical or basic/applied focus. The authors advocate for more engagement between physics and philosophy to clarify what “reality” means in science.
