Black rat snakes can reach up to nine feet, are non-venomous constrictors, and are beneficial garden predators that help control rodent populations. They may hiss or coil to mimic rattlesnakes when threatened, but pose little risk to people or pets; bites are rare and typically minor if they occur. Size and growth vary with food availability and climate, making a healthy yard a good habitat for these snakes, which can reduce pest problems without human intervention.
Dame Judi Dench’s six‑acre Surrey garden is a living memorial built around about 100 trees, each representing a lost loved one. She highlights eight meaningful features—like a Queen Victoria statue, a white garden, a wildlife pond, a swimming pool, memorial woodland, and the scent of wild garlic—navigating the space through memory and scent while revealing a worm phobia that keeps her out of the dirt.

Bird baths are a great way to attract birds to your yard, but keeping them clean is crucial for the birds' health. To maintain a clean bird bath, choose a location away from debris, always use fresh water, keep it out of direct sunlight, add movement to the water, clean with vinegar, and clean the bath every two to four days. Additionally, dropping a few pennies in the bath can help delay the onset of algae.
Hummingbirds need protein from insects in addition to nectar, and overripe bananas can attract fruit flies, a staple in their diet. Hanging banana peels near feeders creates a natural magnet for fruit flies, drawing hummingbirds to your garden. Providing overripe bananas near existing feeders or using a banana-specific feeder can help attract hummingbirds, while ensuring the feeder is cleaned regularly and nectar is replaced.
TikTok users are suggesting replacing bird feeders with birdhouses and ponds to reduce pests in yards and gardens, as birds will search for pests to satisfy their appetite when feeders are removed. This natural method is cost-effective and environmentally friendly, but lacks scientific backing. Additionally, removing bird feeders can also help deter other pests, although results may take time and may be less effective for large-scale pest invasions.
An Adelaide Hills man discovered a small hole in his garden, sparking fear and curiosity among thousands online. Speculations arose that the hole could be the residence of either a trapdoor spider or a wolf spider, with some sharing their own encounters with these species. Trapdoor spiders live underground in burrows covered with doors made of leaves or sticks, while wolf spiders live on the ground in leaf litter or burrows. The lack of a door over the hole suggests it could be a trapdoor spider burrow.
A meteorite that was seen falling across the night sky in France has been found in a woman's garden. The fireball, known as a bolide, was caught on cameras and reported to the Fireball Recovery and InterPlanetary Observation Network (FRIPON)/Vigie-Ciel. The fragments, weighing around 1.5 pounds in total, have been taken for analysis at the National Museum of Natural History in France.
Garlic powder is a simple and effective way to repel wasps from your yard and garden. Wasps dislike the potent smell of garlic and tend to fly in the opposite direction when they encounter it. You can create a garlic powder solution by mixing it with water in a spray bottle and spraying it around your yard. Alternatively, you can use fresh minced garlic or grow garlic in your garden as a natural and pet-safe repellent.
Citronella candles are not as effective in repelling mosquitoes as previously thought, as essential oils evaporate too quickly. However, they still provide some protection as mosquitoes are not fond of the scent or heat that comes with smoke. To effectively repel mosquitoes, experts suggest covering up with suitable clothing, using insect repellent, keeping the garden tidy, and using fans to disperse carbon dioxide.
BASIL architecture has designed an extension for a house in Aalter, Flanders, as a pavilion connected to the existing house. The new section has light-rich spaces, nestled in the green character of the surrounding garden and vast landscape. The extension is designed to underscore the pavilion feel, splitting the walkways into an indoor and outdoor course created by airy canopies acting as sunshades and covered terrace areas. The main structure consists of a few concrete slabs on which the zigzag plan is projected. The façade finish is a secondary visible aluminum structure supplemented by perforated panels.
The E8 House, designed by Meir Lobaton Corona and Rafael Ortiz Cervantes, is a residential project that accommodates four families with different requirements and demands. The built volumes are folded towards the western boundary, leaving room for a semi-deciduous garden that serves as a natural buffer and gathering place between the dwellings. The four units are intertwined in a seamless three-dimensional puzzle, where their limits are blurred, giving the impression of being a single house rather than an aggregation of apartments. The apparent red clay brick load-bearing walls create a continuous texture, occasionally interrupted by wooden doors and window frames.
