Study Links Lifetime Light Drinking to Age-Related Declines in Hand Dexterity and Balance
A new study published in Alcohol and Alcoholism finds that even low-level alcohol consumption over a lifetime is associated with worse hand dexterity and poorer balance in healthy adults as they age. Led by Timothy C. Durazzo of Stanford University, the research suggests that the combination of advancing age and cumulative alcohol intake negatively impacts motor coordination and postural stability. These findings challenge previous public health views that light drinking carries minimal functional risks, aligning with broader evidence that any alcohol use may affect brain structure and increase cancer risk.
