Roman Space Telescope to unveil panoramic sky maps with a 300MP camera

NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope will launch to a point about 1.5 million kilometers from Earth and use a 300-megapixel camera to survey large swaths of the sky in near-infrared. Built around a donated 2-meter mirror from a former spy-satellite program, it will deliver around 20 petabytes of data over its first five years, producing some of the largest panoramic space images ever and surveying 50 times more sky than Hubble did in 30 years. It also carries a coronagraph to image exoplanets and will work alongside ground-based Rubin Observatory surveys, helping advance discoveries of distant galaxies, exoplanets, and dark matter while informing future Habitable Worlds Observatory plans.

Roman Space Telescope Begins Commissioning at L2 After Falcon Heavy Launch

NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope has kicked off its mission commissioning at the sun–Earth L2 point after a Aug. 30 launch aboard SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy. The spacecraft has deployed its solar panels and high-gain antenna, and teams have begun powering on and calibrating the Coronagraph Instrument as the system checks continue, with first science operations expected to start after weeks of checkout and first images anticipated in January 2027 to study dark energy and discover exoplanets.

NASA's Trailblazer Gets a Name in the Sky with a New Exoplanet Hunter

NASA is launching the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope on Aug 30, 2026, from Kennedy Space Center aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy. The 300-megapixel infrared observatory has a field of view at least 100 times larger than Hubble and will survey about 2 billion galaxies to probe dark energy and dark matter while hunting around 100,000 exoplanets (including rogue planets) using a coronagraph to block starlight. It will operate at the Sun–Earth L2 point, stream more than a terabyte of data daily, and cost about $4.3 billion for a five-year mission, continuing NASA’s legacy of space-based astronomy named after its pioneering leader Nancy Grace Roman.

"Nancy Grace Roman: Pioneering Astronomer Who Shaped the Stars"

Nancy Grace Roman, known as the "mother of Hubble," was a pioneering astronomer who founded NASA's space astronomy program. She made significant contributions to our understanding of galactic evolution and developed a method for gauging stellar metallicities. Despite facing gender discrimination, Roman became the first woman to hold an executive office at NASA and played a crucial role in advocating for space-based observatories. Her vision and legacies continue to shape astronomy, and a new infrared telescope named in her honor, the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, is set to launch in 2027 to further explore the Universe and search for exoplanets.

Nancy Grace Roman's Discovery of Supermassive Dark Stars.

The Nancy Grace Roman space telescope, set to launch in 2027, may be able to detect supermassive dark stars, which could have seeded the formation of supermassive black holes in the early universe. These dark stars would have been too faint and distant for current telescopes to detect, but the Roman telescope's wide-field infrared capabilities could make it possible. The authors propose combining observations from Roman with the James Webb Space Telescope to confirm dark star candidates.
