Surprise Solar Storms Illuminate Skies Across US and Australia.

A rare major geomagnetic storm caused auroras to light up the skies across the US from North Carolina to Arizona. The storm, which began just after midnight, lasted for more than 12 hours and was almost comparable to the northern lights seen in Iceland. Auroras form when electrons from the sun collide with the upper parts of the atmosphere and can only be seen during nighttime. The last time a level four geomagnetic storm occurred was in 2017, and additional minor to moderate auroral activity might happen again this weekend in the northern part of the US.
